BROOKLYN PARK, MD - A man lying on Ritchie Highway was hit by a car on Monday, police said.

Officers said the man was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.

The collision happened around 4:10 a.m. on Ritchie Highway near Cresswell Road, authorities said.

Police said a 2021 Ford Explorer SUV was heading south on Ritchie Highway when it encountered the pedestrian lying in the roadway.

Officers said the driver "exhausted all attempts to avoid striking the pedestrian but could not do so."

The driver called 911 and stayed on the scene until emergency crews arrived, authorities said.

Medics took the pedestrian to the University of Maryland R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, police said.

Officers said the driver was not hurt.

Detectives could not interview the pedestrian because he was in critical condition.

Authorities don't know why he was lying in the roadway.

The Anne Arundel County Police Department is still investigating.
