Cranberry Crazed

A key ingredient to a tasty Thanksgiving is cranberries.

This is a great time of year to delve into all things cranberry. You probably already know cranberries are little powerhouses of vitamins, antioxidants, phytonutrients, and even fiber.     I hope you'll try this recipe. This quick and delicious cranberry sauce only takes about 10 minutes to make and tastes 100 times better than canned sauce. You can leave out the Grand Marnier, but if you do, you'll want more orange flavor in your sauce. You can achieve this by using a bit more of the orange juice concentrate.   It's always a sticky matter to finely dice crystallized ginger cubes. If you have a sturdy metal garlic press (not plastic, as it tends to hold odors), try pressing the crystallized ginger cubes through your press. Otherwise, use a…

The Edible Canvas of Holiday Cookies

A look at a fun and time-honored tradition of decorating holiday cookies for family gatherings or holiday parties.

One of my favorite childhood holiday traditions decorating cookies; the possibilities were endless. In the world of holiday cookies, you could have a purple reindeer with an orange Reese's Piece nose to guide Santa's sleigh. You could have a blue Christmas tree with red hots and chocolate chips for lights. In the imaginative world of the holiday cookie, anything is possible. Here are some to remember when decorating holiday cookies either at a party with friends or at home with family. If you choose to decorate your cookies before baking them, use decorations that are able to withstand the heat of baking. This includes nuts, dried fruits, colored/natural sugars and sprinkles.  If you choose to decorate your cookies after baking them, first…

But whereas travelers spent on average of $544 last year, they will spend only $498 this year. Ninety percent of the holiday’s travel will be done by car and seven percent in the air, The Washington Post reported. It's All About The Pie

The key to making the ultimate Thanksgiving dessert.

Pie is the ultimate Thanksgiving desert. In our family, we usually have two different kinds, pumpkin and apple. We usually also have pecan and mincemeat as well, but as bite-sized tarts instead of pie, since not everyone is fond of mincemeat and a big ol' slab of pecan pie can be cloying.   I know, it's crazy to offer so many deserts, but Thanksgiving dinner is all about the pies! Get local stories delivered right to your inbox or smartphone everyday with our free newsletter. Simple, fast sign-up here. If you have a phobia about pie-making, or just prefer to focus on other things, you can order your apple pie from Spring Mill Bakery in Gaithersburg. I like my own pumpkin pie better than theirs, but their apple pie is absolutely stellar…

A Shop 'Til You Drop 2012 Holiday Season

Early Thanksgiving means more shopping time.

While you may just be putting the Halloween decorations away, retailers are already getting out the Christmas trees, Hanukkah menorahs and Kwanzaa candleholders, prepping for the longest holiday shopping season possible. For decades, now, Black Friday has heralded the start to the month-long holiday shopping season. Thanksgiving, celebrated the fourth Thursday in November since 1941 when Congress passed a law, falls on Nov. 22 this year, which means that there are a whopping 32 days of shopping, assuming you are not the type who buys gifts of lottery tickets and beef jerky from the convenience store on the way to your Christmas celebration. In that case, you have 32 days during which to procrastinate. Get local stories delivered right to …

Thanksgiving Recipes: How to Cook Stuffing and Other Favorite Side Dishes

A turkey can't just sit alone on the table. Here are some recipes for Thanksgiving's most popular side dishes.

Don't Waste Those Leftover Thanksgiving Goodies

These recipes offer a variety of ways to keep Thanksgiving leftovers from going to waste.

Sometimes life blesses you with treasured memories of Thanksgiving in a grandparent's home with a fire glowing in the fireplace, faux turkeys on the table that thrill you as a child, sparking crystal, recipes that have been passed down for generations and most importantly, the company of relatives who care about you. If this sounds too good to be true, it isn't. I feel fortunate to have grown up and experienced many Thanksgivings and Christmases in my late great-grandmother's home in Winchester, KY, or my late grandmother's home in Ashland, KY. Today, things have changed a great deal. I'll be heading to Lexington, KY, for Thanksgiving, and the biggest treat will be taking my son to see my mother. We may wind up having our holiday meal in a…
