Gophers Face Chesapeake in Softball State Regional Semifinal

The game will be held Wednesday afternoon at Chesapeake High School.

The Glen Burnie Gophers will face off against the Chesapeake Cougars Wednesday afternoon in the state's softball regional semifinal. The game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. at Chesapeake, 4798 Mountain Rd. in Pasadena. Glen Burnie beat the South River Seahawks 3-2 on Monday. Chesapeake ended North County's playoff run on Monday, defeating the Lady Knights 12-6, according to the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA) website. The winner will play either Severna Park or Broadneck, who also play Wednesday at 4 p.m. Two Glen Burnie students—pitcher Alex Moos and shortstop Melanie Slowinski—made the 2012 Anne Arundel County Coaches' All-County softball first team, according to the Maryland Gazette. Glen Burnie Area Athletes Sign to Play College Sports

Over the past week, at least three Glen Burnie seniors have signed letters of intent to play college sports.

Three Glen Burnie area high school students will be heading to play college sports next year—two from North County and one from Glen Burnie. On Nov. 9, Melanie Slowinski, 17, of Severn signed a letter of intent to play softball at Rutgers University. The Glen Burnie High School senior finally made it official after a knowing for a year that she wanted to attend the New Jersey School, according to The Capital. On Friday, Nov. 11, Cliff Cornish, 16, of Glen Burnie signed a letter of intent to play basketball at High Point University, surrounded by friends and family at North County High School. Spring Sports: State Playoff Brackets Revealed

MPSSAA finalizes state tournaments for boys' and girls' lacrosse, baseball and softball.

Beginning with lacrosse this Monday, the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA) unveiled its playoff brackets for the 2011 season. Complete brackets can be viewed at MPSSAA.org. Also, note that in all sports, seeds one through four were awarded based on win-loss record, while the five through 12 seeds are slotted at random. North County Softball Versus Glen Burnie Postponed

Wednesday's planned softball game between North County and Glen Burnie postponed until Saturday.

Wednesday afternoon's planned softball game between North County and Glen Burnie has been postponed due to the fields at North County being unplayable. The game now is scheduled to be held Saturday at noon at North County, according to NCHS athletic director Marianne Shultz. Check back Saturday evening for coverage of our Game of the Week.
