Mission BBQ handed out free sandwiches to veterans and active members of the armed forces on Monday, while Gino's Burgers and Chicken gave out free cheeseburgers to those who have served. Charm City Cakes, the Baltimore-based company of Food Network fame, even got in on the event with a cake showing the iconic scene of soldiers raising a flag on Iwo Jima. While many businesses are still trying to learn how the Affordable Care Act will affect them, others say they are bracing themselves for higher costs.
Many small business owners in Maryland said they are bracing themselves for new costs and potential penalties associated with insuring workers after the Supreme Court upheld major provisions of President Obama's health care law. While many business owners said the law won't affect them because they only employ a handful of people, those owners with larger staffs said they feared additional costs that could cripple their businesses. Under the Affordable Care Act, small businesses will be required to offer insurance to workers if they employ more than 50 full-time people, or pay a penalty. "I know people who have started looking at the numbers, and for some of them it's going to be cheaper to pay the penalty than to cover their employees…

Starting out as a hobby, Jenn Tompkins turned baking cookiebars for her friends into a small business a little more than two years ago.
Jenn Tompkins—known to some as Jenn the Biker—began baking cookiebars and pumpkin rolls to take to biker events for her friends. Over time her friends began to refer to her as Jenn the Baker, encouraging her to sell her treats. Deanna Pasternak went to college with Tompkins in Pennsylvania and visited her in Maryland, getting her first cookiebar fix. "The first time I ate a cookiebar, I knew that Jenn either had to start a business or I needed to steal her recipe," Pasternak said, who now lives in Hawaii. Tompkins and her husband, who live in Brooklyn Park, decided to listen to their friends. "Since we couldn't invite everyone to our home for cookiebars and pumpkin rolls, we opened our Internet doors in October of 2009 as JTB's Kitchen," …

The new Glen Burnie barbecue restaurant has quickly become part of the community.
Opening on Sept. 11, 2011, Mission BBQ in the Harundale Mall shopping center has quickly made itself at home in the Glen Burnie community. As tight-knit as I’ve learned that Glen Burnie can be, I was surprised when Lisa Vogel Penix suggested it as a place that every new resident in town should know. And so was Steve Newton, co-founder of Mission BBQ. “That’s just so humbling,” he said when I mentioned why I was there for dinner last week. “The community’s been incredible. I’m in awe of the support that we’ve gotten.” I’d been to the restaurant once before, but I wasn’t going to ignore the opportunity to check it out again at Lisa’s suggestion. I stopped in Mission BBQ between assignments last Thursday and opted for a NC pulled pork BBQ …

After a few Twitter exchanges, I took up the offer to stop by the Sweet Tooth in the Chesapeake Glen Shopping Center.
It started with a Tweet. "Hey @GlenBurniePatch, have you ever heard of us?! We'd love if you came to see us and write about us!" was what I received in my Twitter feed last Wednesday from @SweetTooth410. Followed by, "@GlenBurniePatch keeps everything local!" Someone after my own heart. "@SweetTooth410 Thanks! I wasn't familiar but will make sure to stop by soon!!" I replied. Then she sealed the deal—"@GlenBurniePatch thanks! get an even better deal on tuesdays-thursday during 5-7 for our happy [hour]!! half off pretty much everything :)" I stopped by Monday afternoon to check out Sweet Tooth, the frozen yogurt store in the Chesapeake Glen shopping center. Once I was there I realized I'd seen the place before but hadn't been inside. …
