Cyber Monday: Finding Deals Online

Are you gearing up to let your fingers do the walking on Cyber Monday?

Anne Arundel residents who didn't want to brave the crowds on Black Friday or Small Business Saturday still have one more big chance to save courtesy of Cyber Monday. Similar to the two other major shopping events, Cyber Monday differs in that consumers don’t have to leave the comfort of their own homes (or offices) to take advantage of some pretty big pre-holiday deals. All the bargains laid out for Cyber Monday are for online shoppers only. So how can you find the best deals online this Cyber Monday? While most major retailers that have an online presence waited to tip their hats on their online deals, many have splash pages set up that they're inviting shoppers to bookmark in advance of the Nov. 26 shopping holiday. Here are just a few …

Layaway Makes a Comeback for 2012 Holiday Season

Try layaway plans at one or more of these retailers in Anne Arundel County.

In this economy, some shoppers are fretting over being able to afford that special toy, bauble or other item that they know will bring a smile to their children, spouse, friend or family member. Consider layaway as a way to spread payments out over time, and be able to check things off those holiday lists. Popular during the Great Depression in the 1930s, layaway fell out of fashion in the 1980s as credit card usage became widespread. Many companies are once again offering the service, which allows customers to make installment payments on an item, sometimes with a small fee added to the item’s price for the company’s administrative costs. In Anne Arundel County, try one of these retailers’ 2012 holiday layaway programs (see stores to …

Day-After Christmas TIP$

For those who love to shop—even the day after Christmas.

Most people may not be in the mood to continue shopping after the holidays, but there are always a select few that do so for the many discounted items the day after Christmas. Most of the department and retail stores mark down everything—and not just the decorations. You can significantly save on appliances, electronics and even apparel. Wal-Mart also has a "Value of the Day" to save you even more money. There are many establishments that are extending their holiday returns such as Best Buy which extends through Jan. 24, 2012. The biggest tip … don’t forget your receipts. Places such as Home Depot offer 12 months special financing. If you make a large purchase such as an appliance, you will pay no interest if paid in full within 12 months…

TIP$ for Making a Difference

See how $1 can help make a difference in someone else's life.

Are you looking for ways to give back this holiday season? Do you think you cannot afford to make a difference? Well think again. In the December issue of O Magazine, a list was provided to show how far just one or two dollars can go to the needy. Just think of how far $20 would go between these organizations. You could save an animal, educate a child, feed the hungry, support our troops or create a smile. A full list of resources can be viewed here. If you have a Secret Santa swap at the office, why not take a list of these organizations and have each person pick one out of a hat to donate to instead of giving something to each other that you probably do not need? This is a great way to get inspired and learn something new. Please keep in…

Make Sure you Save as the Kids Head Back to School

Here are some T.I.P.$ to get you prepared and ready for back to school.

It’s back-to-school time and we have some T.I.P.$ and ideas to get you ready with a plan of action. As summer comes to an end, so does the spring/summer collection of clothes and shoes. Now is the time to check all the clearance items to get those bargains while they make room for the fall lineup. Lisa Dunham, a mother of three from Glen Burnie, shared this tip: “Most stores put their school supplies on clearance a week or so after school starts. I always go and stock up on supplies, so if the kids need to replenish throughout the year, I already have everything”. Patty Conticello who works for Anne Arundel County Public Schools offers these tips to get a head start on paperwork: It’s hard to believe that school is starting up in a few …

Do You Cut Coupons?

More summer saving T.I.P.$. and ideas.

I caught up with Michele Drocella of Pasadena who owns her own handbell retail business, Kids Play Music, and teaches piano to students at Community United Methodist Church. Her daughter is getting married and her son is a full-time college student. Michele started preparing herself about ways to save money for her upcoming expenses. "Have you heard of Extreme Couponing?" Michele asked. This is when you time the purchase of a certain item so that you are buying it when it is on sale, combine that sale with a coupon that can be doubled in value or shop during the sale and stack a store coupon with a manufacturer’s coupon. These combined discounts result in many free products and significant savings (there is also a reality TV show on this …

I recently watched the show Extreme Couponing and it did get me to thinking about trying coupons. I would not carry it to that extreme though. I think it is rediculous to buy 8 carts of food or spend 2 hours at the checkout station. I would however consider using coupons on a much smaller basis. :)   more ›
