Three students in Anne Arundel County won the prestigious national scholarships.

Three students in Anne Arundel County–including two from North County High School–won Gates Millennium scholarships as they prepare for college. Only two other students from Anne Arundel County have ever won the scholarships, and Maryland totaled 13 of the 1,000 scholarships handed out by the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation this year. "This is just another example of the incredible students we have in our school system," Superintendent Kevin Maxwell said in a statement from AACPS. Carter, who is in the AVID …

Prom Costs on Rise: How Much are You Spending?

Glen Burnie High School’s prom is scheduled for May 4, and North County's prom is scheduled for May 25.

A lot goes into having the perfect prom. There’s the dress, with nails, hair and shoes. Plus there is the limo, dinner beforehand, the actual prom ticket and any after-prom activities. All of these activities are adding up and causing the average cost of prom to skyrocket. According to a recent report published on Huffington Post, the average prom cost in 2013 is $1,139, which is a 5 percent increase from last year. Prom for Glen Burnie High School is scheduled for May 4 at the National Aquarium in Baltimore, while the big dance for North County High School is May 25 at the BWI Marriott. But it seems like the spending for the special senior night begins long before the actual dance. According to an article on MSN Money, two of the main …

Luke Andraka and Dana Lunkenheimer, seniors at North County High School, won second place in the "We Can Change the World" challenge, according to the Siemens Corporation–the competition organizers. The pair will split a $25,000 prize for a project focusing on the negative effects of abandoned "ghost" crab traps, and their three-pronged proposal for getting rid of the traps that cause millions of crabs to die every year. "We attacked the problem on three fronts; public outreach, law policy and reinventing the common crab trap to make it cheaper for water men and safer for animals," the students said in their project description. Their design focused on securing traps using zinc rings, which will dissolve and cause the traps to fall open if…

The man who was arrested in North County High School has been released, but must avoid schools and guns.

A district court judge ordered the Glen Burnie man who entered North County High School earlier this month to be free under supervision, according to The Maryland Gazette. Police arrested Justin Matthew Beaumont, 25, on Feb. 4 after he was found to have entered the school during operating hours. School officials said he had no interaction with any of the students. See the original story on Patch here. The school resource officer who made the arrest reported Beaumont had been acting "out of it" when he was found inside the building, and had a bottle of methadone in his possession. North County Student Jack Andraka is First Lady's Guest at State of the Union

The student has taken his talents from the classroom in Glen Burnie to the White House.

Local viewers of President Barack Obama's State of the Union Address on Tuesday night may recognize a face in the crowd, as North County High School student Jack Andraka will be in attendance. Andraka, 16, made a huge splash in 2012 with his invention of a paper-based sensor that can help more accurately and efficiently detect pancreatic cancer—a feat that won him first place in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, plus the attention of several patent-seeking companies. He has since been featured in several publications, including Smithsonian Magazine, and was the subject of a short film called You Don't Know Jack by famed documentary filmmaker Morgan Spurlock. First Lady Michelle Obama invited Andraka to the address as a …

Jack Andraka: North County's 'Rock Star'

Sophomore Jack Andraka's invention of a test to detect pancreatic cancer easier and cheaper is just one of the local kid's latest achievements.

Dressed in a gray hoodie and jeans, Jack Andraka looks like a typical 15-year-old high school sophomore with a Justin Bieber haircut, circa a year ago. But once he starts talking about his science fair project, it becomes clear Jack is no average high schooler. His science project is far beyond the typical baking soda volcano many youths construct. And after winning a pair of prestigious national prizes for that science project this year, Jack drops names of celebrities into conversation with the ease of a budding celebrity he himself is becoming. Oprah called, wanting an interview the day after his sit-down with Patch for possibly her magazine or talk show on her network. Yes, that Oprah. He's met Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton…
