Police: Employee Takes Gun, Strikes Would-Be Robber in Glen Burnie

A report says an employee at Mikie's Diner scared off a would-be robber after taking the suspect's gun and striking him.

Anne Arundel County police are seeking information on the suspect in an attempted armed robbery early Wednesday at Mikie's Diner in Glen Burnie. But the suspect did not walk away unscathed, according to police. Shortly after 6 a.m., a man carrying a firearm entered Mikie's Diner on the 1200 block of Crain Highway and confronted an employee. Police said the employee started fighting the suspect, took the gun away from him and began striking the suspect repeatedly with the gun. The suspect fled south on Crain Highway, according to police. Arriving officers searched the immediate area, but failed to locate the suspect. Police recovered the weapon, and said the investigation is ongoing. Of course the employee assessed the situation and acted according to his/ her quick assessment and instincts. Really now, how much time do you need to assess a man sporting dreadlocks with a black hoodie draped over his head. Breakfast for Lunch? Almost as Good as Breakfast for Dinner

Family-run Mikie’s is known for offering breakfast all day.

When you walk into Mikie’s you immediately know that it’s a family place. The diner is decorated with pictures of the owner’s children and toys from their childhood. “That right there? That’s my tricycle,” said Scott Wagner, vice president of Mikie’s and Michael’s Eighth Avenue, both owned by his family. “And that picture? I’m the one on the right.” Being that breakfast food is one of my favorites, I was excited when Liz Wagner suggested I check out Mikie’s. (I’m sure you guessed, but Liz is part of the Wagner family. She’s married to Scott’s brother Mike.) I'd driven by the diner on Crain Highway many times and was intrigued by the “Voted Best Breakfast in Town” sign.
