Maryland State Police arrested a Baltimore City police officer Thursday night on charges of prostitution, based on an investigation by state and federal authorities that he was trafficking his 19-year-old wife through an online escort service. Police charged Lamin Manneh, 31, of Baltimore, with human trafficking and prostitution. Police charged his wife, Marissa Braun, 19, with prostitution. According to a statement from MSP, members of the Child Recovery Unit and FBI's Child Exploitation Task Force arranged to meet with a young female at a Linthicum hotel through an escort website. Police will be on the lookout for intoxicated drivers as people celebrate St. Patrick's Day this weekend.
As people plan for Irish stew and green beers in celebration of St. Patrick's Day, area police will be looking to keep the roads safe by taking drunk drivers off of them. Dubbed "Project Save Our Loved Ones" (SOLO), the initiative will consist of Anne Arundel County police and Maryland state troopers from the Glen Burnie Barrack with specialized training in recognizing impaired driving. The officers will set up DUI checkpoints and deploy mass patrols in areas around the county known to have frequent instances of impaired driving. "The intense enforcement effort will occur throughout the entire weekend and include on-duty and off-duty officers," according to a press release from AACOPD. Police arrested a woman after video evidence shows her ramming a vehicle into another car several times on Baltimore-Washington Parkway in Linthicum.
Maryland State Police charged a woman with attempted murder, assault, reckless endangerment and vehicle theft after she rammed a stolen van into another vehicle on Baltimore-Washington Parkway and then crashed the van into two more vehicles, reports The Maryland Gazette. Shortly after 1:30 p.m. on Friday, at least one witness observed a Ford van ram into a Volvo several times on northbound I-295 near W. Nursery Road, then crash into a Mercury van and BMW on the shoulder of the road. A driver who was trailing the vehicles caught the incident on camera and showed the video to police, reports The Gazette. The 17th annual plunge where participants run into the chilly Chesapeake Bay will take place on Jan. 26, 2013, at Sandy Point State Park.
Before you know it, 2013 will be here and so will the annual Maryland State Police (MSP) Polar Bear Plunge. Each year, thousands take a quick dip in the Chesapeake Bay to raise funds for Special Olympics Maryland. The Plungefest, which is open to the public, is set for Jan. 26, 2013, at Sandy Point State Park. Frigid Friday for participating schools will take place the day before the Plungefest. To participate in the plunge, you must collect a minimum of $50 in pledges—and if you're younger than 18, you must have a parent or guardian's written consent. It's still early but more than $200,000 has already been raised for Special Olympics Maryland to date, according to the event's website that also has a running countdown until the event. …

UPDATED (3:12 p.m)—A Harford County man was killed Thursday morning when his car went airborne off Interstate 95 and landed on Interstate 195. According to a news release from Maryland State Police, the crash took place shortly afer 7 a.m., when a 2006 Ford Focus struck the left guardrail on northbound I-95. It went airborne, landing in the eastbound lane of I-195, striking a 2002 Chevy Suburban. The cause of the crash was not immediately known, and the incident remains under investigation. Police are looking for information about a light blue Toyota that may have been involved in a fatal hit-and-run.
Maryland State Police have released a description of the vehicle suspected to be involved in a fatal hit-and-run early Saturday. Police said a light blue Toyota traveling north on Interstate 295 may have been the vehicle that struck and killed Henry Smith, 71, of Laurel, who was walking near the highway shortly before 3 a.m. on Saturday. Police said a left headlight was out on the Toyota, and the front bumper was dragging on the road. The car traveled with it flashers on and exited Interstate 295 onto Waterview Avenue into the Westport neighborhood of Baltimore. AAA Says 43.6 million travelers expected over the holiday weekend, the fourth consecutive increase.
Thanksgiving Day is just around the corner the countdown is on for the most congested roads and crowded airports of the year. AAA is predicting the fourth consecutive increase in the number of Thanksgiving travelers this year, albeit on smaller budgets. The travel group expects 43.6 million Americans will hit the highways and airports over the holiday, a 0.7 percent bump over last year, reports USA Today. But whereas travelers spent on average of $544 last year, they will spend only $498 this year. Ninety percent of the holiday’s travel will be done by car and seven percent in the air, The Washington Post reported. State police urge motorists to stay off the roads as much as possible.
Although Maryland State Police is not handing out citations for being on the road, they are strongly discouraging residents from driving. State police spokesperson Greg Shipley warned residents that increasing amount of standing water is a significant hazard to drivers because of the high risk for vehicles to hydroplane. “People don’t realize that you don’t have to be going that fast on the road to hydroplane,” he said. Hydroplaning is caused by water being pushed up to the tires and creating a barrier of water, which decreases tire traction and inhibits drivers’ ability to safely steer their vehicles. The law that takes effect in Maryland on Oct. 1 still requires kids younger than 8 to be in a safety seat, unless they are 4 feet 9 inches or taller.
UPDATED (12:40 p.m.)—A new child safety seat law will go into effect Oct. 1 to remove the weight exemption for children who are more than 65 pounds, according to a Maryland State Police press release. The state law still requires that children use car seats up until the time they turn 8 years old, unless they are 4 feet 9 inches or taller. The law is a primary enforcement law, which means drivers can be detained and cited for violating the seat belt law. The fine is $50 for each child in the vehicle that is not properly restrained. The fine also applies to children ages 8 to 16, who are still required to wear a seat belt.
