Thanksgiving Travel Will Be Even Busier This Year

AAA Says 43.6 million travelers expected over the holiday weekend, the fourth consecutive increase.

Thanksgiving Day is just around the corner the countdown is on for the most congested roads and crowded airports of the year. AAA is predicting the fourth consecutive increase in the number of Thanksgiving travelers this year, albeit on smaller budgets. The travel group expects 43.6 million Americans will hit the highways and airports over the holiday, a 0.7 percent bump over last year, reports USA Today. But whereas travelers spent on average of $544 last year, they will spend only $498 this year. Ninety percent of the holiday’s travel will be done by car and seven percent in the air, The Washington Post reported. AAA: Fewer Traveling This Holiday Weekend

Automobile travel is expected to go down 3 percent across the country, but five out of six travelers will still drive to their holiday destination.

Though the American Automobile Association (AAA) forecasts 39 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home during the Independence Day holiday weekend, it is a 2.5 percent decline from those who traveled a year ago. The Independence Day holiday travel period for this year is defined as Thursday, June 30, to Monday, July 4. “AAA is projecting a slight decline in the number of Independence Day travelers mainly due to fuel prices being approximately one dollar per gallon higher than last year,” said Glen MacDonell, director of AAA Travel Services. “Increased fuel costs are also responsible for a shift in the demographics of the typical Independence Day traveler as higher prices impact lower income households more significantly.” …
