Shelter Program Boosts Spirits of Homeless, Volunteers at Christmas

Ministry at Ferndale United Methodist Church touches all facets of life for those who are homeless.

Nannie Waller and Alan Helland's lives literally may have been saved Christmas night by the generosity of people at Ferndale United Methodist Church through its participation in The Arundel House of Hope's (AHOH) Winter Relief Emergency Shelter Program. Waller and Helland are among the area's homeless and they did not spend Christmas alone, cold or unloved. By contrast, they slept in warmth and were fed a traditional American Christmas dinner, received gifts and had volunteers all around them. "The volunteers and Ms. Alice [Neary] did a fantastic job," Waller said. "I liked everything, including their hospitality. I could not thank Ms. Alice and the volunteers enough. Opportunities to Volunteer at Christmas Can Bring Cheer

Organizations including Arundel House of Hope offer ways to help others

For some people, Christmas Day will mean family, presents and food. For others, it will mean being alone but volunteering to help others could be a good solution to beat the blues and bring cheer at the same time. One Glen Burnie resident who has volunteered in many ways, Lois Shaw, said volunteering has benefits for those who do it. Some of the ways she has volunteered include donating furniture for a church play, assisting with North County Emergency Outreach Network (NCEON), doing Christmas shopping for those in nursing homes and rehabilitation facilities, donating clothing to students and tutoring.
