Nearly 700 drivers made contact with officers, who arrested a total of 11 people during checkpoints or area patrols on Friday in the northern part of Anne Arundel County.
Five drivers were arrested for driving under the influence (DUI) in the northern part of the county on Friday, according to Anne Arundel County police. Patch previously reported that police would conduct a DUI checkpoint iniative on Friday along Ritchie Highway and 11th Avenue in Brooklyn Park. According to police, the Brooklyn Park area accounted for 6 percent of all DUI arrests and approximately 4 percent of DUI-related crashes in 2011. County police worked with Maryland State Police to run two separate checkpoints on northbound and southbound Ritchie Highway, as well as running other patrols in the area. Anne Arundel County police will be conducting a driving under the influence (DUI) checkpoint in the northern part of the county on Friday, Sept. 28. Police said the checkpoint will be conducted along Ritchie Highway near 11th and Townsend avenues in Brooklyn Park. Increased patrols and DUI checkpoints prove to be effective in reducing the number of alcohol-related crashes, said police. Some research shows that crashes involving alcohol drop significantly when well-publicized checkpoints are conducted. According to a police press release, previous checkpoints in Anne Arundel County resulted in 397 arrests for DUI and 109 arrests for drug offenses.
