Police will be on the lookout for intoxicated drivers as people celebrate St. Patrick's Day this weekend.
As people plan for Irish stew and green beers in celebration of St. Patrick's Day, area police will be looking to keep the roads safe by taking drunk drivers off of them. Dubbed "Project Save Our Loved Ones" (SOLO), the initiative will consist of Anne Arundel County police and Maryland state troopers from the Glen Burnie Barrack with specialized training in recognizing impaired driving. The officers will set up DUI checkpoints and deploy mass patrols in areas around the county known to have frequent instances of impaired driving. "The intense enforcement effort will occur throughout the entire weekend and include on-duty and off-duty officers," according to a press release from AACOPD. Anne Arundel County police will be conducting a driving under the influence (DUI) checkpoint in the northern part of the county on Friday, Sept. 28. Police said the checkpoint will be conducted along Ritchie Highway near 11th and Townsend avenues in Brooklyn Park. Increased patrols and DUI checkpoints prove to be effective in reducing the number of alcohol-related crashes, said police. Some research shows that crashes involving alcohol drop significantly when well-publicized checkpoints are conducted. According to a police press release, previous checkpoints in Anne Arundel County resulted in 397 arrests for DUI and 109 arrests for drug offenses. They need to be doing checkpoints for child carseats and boosters near the elementary schools in the afternoons. I see dozens of parents every day that are not securing the kids or not securing them properly.   more ›
