Supporters of Dream Act Referendum Intervene in Lawsuit

A local court says MDpetitions.com can defend the petition drive that put the DREAM Act to a referendum

By Jessica Talson Capital News Service ANNAPOLIS - An Anne Arundel County Court has ruled that MDPetitions.com can intervene in a lawsuit between proponents of the recently passed Maryland DREAM Act and the Maryland State Board of Elections. The group will legally be able to defend the petition drive that put the DREAM Act to a referendum. DREAM Act proponents had sued the Maryland Board of Elections to stop the law from going to referendum on the grounds that tens of thousands of the signatures were invalid. MDPetitions.com, led by Delegates Neil Parrott, R-Washington, and Patrick McDonough, R-Baltimore, opposes the DREAM Act and collected the signatures to put the law to a vote. Gov. The lawsuit seeks to overturn successful petition drive.

The lawsuit was filed by Casa De Maryland, and supported by SEIU Local 1199 and the Maryland State Education Association. More than 12 boxes, each brimming with petition signatures, were stacked around the entrance to the Maryland Secretary of State’s office on Thursday evening. They were delivered there by volunteers and delegates who want to see the Dream Act canceled by placing it on the 2012 ballot for a statewide referendum. They needed 55,736 signatures. And Republican Delegate Neil Parrott (R-Hagerstown) said on Thursday that with this newest batch, they have amassed more than 110,000. “But that’s no reason to deny students a good education." I couldn't agree more, however, please come into our country legally. My signature is in one of those boxes and I will be voting against the dream act when it is on the ballot. This is a clear example of our state elected officials trying to put the covers over our head once again like they do with everything else.   more ›

Post: Lawmakers Move Toward Putting In-State Tuition Law to Public Vote

Opponents of the law that granted in-state tuition rates to illegal immigrant students took a step toward holding a statewide referendum on the law, the Washington Post reported.

As John Wagner with the Washington Post reported Tuesday, Maryland lawmakers, including District 31 Delegates Nic Kipke (R-Pasadena) and Steve Schuh (R-Gibson Island), submitted a petition that would put the law that granted in-state tuition rates to illegal immigrant students up to a public vote. The lawmakers turned in about 62,000 signatures late Tuesday night, according to Kipke's Facebook page. In order to put the law, also known as the DREAM Act, up to a vote by the public, opponents need to submit 55,736 by June 30, according to the Post.
