North County Student Jack Andraka is First Lady's Guest at State of the Union

The student has taken his talents from the classroom in Glen Burnie to the White House.

Local viewers of President Barack Obama's State of the Union Address on Tuesday night may recognize a face in the crowd, as North County High School student Jack Andraka will be in attendance. Andraka, 16, made a huge splash in 2012 with his invention of a paper-based sensor that can help more accurately and efficiently detect pancreatic cancer—a feat that won him first place in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, plus the attention of several patent-seeking companies. He has since been featured in several publications, including Smithsonian Magazine, and was the subject of a short film called You Don't Know Jack by famed documentary filmmaker Morgan Spurlock. First Lady Michelle Obama invited Andraka to the address as a …

Miller Gets His Bust

A state senator wants a new state bird; one man's technolgical fortress is his castle; and the Senate president feels snubbed by Obama.

It's not a statue in front of the office building that bares his name but Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller did receive a bust of himself this week courtesy of the Regional Manufacturing Institute. Sen. Kathy Klausmeier, a Perry Hall Democrat, gave a sneak preview of the small, light-weight bust of Miller moments before presenting it to the Senate's top dog. "You can't have too much Mike Miller," Klausmeier said. The technology is similar to what was used in a scene of Jurassic Park 3 where a copy of a velociraptor's larynx was recreated. The institute offered legislators in Annapolis the opportunity to have themselves scanned into a computer and get busts of themselves. Miller seemed impressed with the petite bust but joked that it …

Pro-Gun Protesters Rally Outside Maryland State House

Hundreds gather on the day Gov. Martin O'Malley testifies in favor of gun legislation he proposed earlier this year.

By Rashee Raj Kumar Capital News Service Hundreds of gun rights advocates rallied outside the State House Wednesday in opposition to new gun control measures proposed by Gov. Martin O’Malley. As O’Malley testified in favor of new gun restrictions before the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee, protesters outside said his proposals to ban assault weapons, limit magazine sizes and strengthen licensing measures would erode their rights. Jay Hanlon, a retiree from Silver Spring, held a sign arguing that the Second Amendment protected gun ownership, including assault weapons, as a check against “Domestic Enemies.” “That’s the weapon we need to defend ourselves against a government gone bad—against our oppressors,” said Hanlon, 65. Kerry …

Website Calls Out Authors of Racist Anti-Obama Posts

The site includes two young commenters from Maryland.

A new blog that exposes racial slurs on social media about President Barack Obama's re-election could draw the attention of the U.S. Secret Service, even though most of its subjects -- two of whom are from Maryland -- appear to be of high school and college age. The real shame is that we have folks, both at home and in government, who either think they are smarter than the officials doing their jobs, or want to nit-pick just for political reasons. Jumping to conclusions before knowing the facts and not knowing when information is temporarily witheld for security reasons is a price our leaders face every day. Unless you are privy to the classified …   more ›

Speak Out: Maryland an Island Among Secession Protesters?

Online petitions to secede surround the Free State.

An apparent wave of post-election discontent has found its way online in the form of tens of thousands of people protesting the outcome of the presidential election by stoking the specter of secession. Maryland isn't among the states represented but all four of its neighbors are. Disgruntled residents from dozens of states—from California to New Hampshire and Texas to Florida—are using the Internet to try to invoke their First Amendment right to “petition the government for redress of grievances” by asking the White House to allow their state to withdraw from the Union. The White House's “We the People” program says the administration will respond to any petition that receives 25,000 or more signatures within 30 days. Petitions that have…

Obama Defeated Romney in Glen Burnie

A look at the vote totals for precincts in Glen Burnie show President Obama narrowly edged challenger Mitt Romney on Election Day.

President Barack Obama earned just 121 more votes than Republican challenger Mitt Romney in Glen Burnie on Tuesday. But an early voting turnout favorable to Obama gave the incumbent 51.31 percent of total local votes to Romney's 45.56 percent, according to unofficial results from the Anne Arundel County Board of Elections. Voters who cast ballots early were able to vote at any of the five early voting locations, so early votes in Glen Burnie were influenced by Anne Arundel County residents who live outside of Glen Burnie. Obama received 77.98 percent of votes at Rippling Woods Elementary School (precinct 002-014), which was the highest percentage for Obama. Romney received 61.78 percent of votes at North County Senior High School (precinct…

Barack Obama Re-Elected President

President Obama defeated Republican Mitt Romney in the 2012 presidential election.

President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden were re-elected Tuesday night, defeating Republican challenger Mitt Romney and his vice-presidential running mate Rep. Paul Ryan. NBC News called the presidential election for Obama around 11:15 EST. The president sent a message on Twitter at 10:14 saying simply, "This happened because of you. Thank you." The Obama campaign won the most expensive presidential race ever, with both parties raising about $2.6 billion. The race was filled with negative campaigning on both sides, from President Obama attacking Romney’s business experience with Bain Capital to Romney lambasting Obama’s handling of the economy. The race tightened during the final months of the campaign, with gaffes and surges …

Barack Obama Wins Maryland

Voters in Maryland on Tuesday gave the state's 10 electoral votes to Barack Obama.

Barack Obama won Maryland’s 10 electoral votes on Tuesday, defeating Republican Mitt Romney. In the 2008 presidential election, the state voted for the Democratic candidate, and since the 1990s has voted for the overall winner of the presidential race three out of five times. Romney and Obama did not campaign aggressively in Maryland. The state has typically been a Democratic stronghold in recent presidential elections.  ABC and CNN reported Obama had won Maryland within 30 minutes of the polls closing around the state. » Follow live election updates here and 'like' our Maryland Patch Facebook page.
