A traffic stop led to the seizure of cocaine at a Glen Burnie hotel Monday night.
Anne Arundel County police arrested a man and woman from Pasadena in a traffic stop that ultimately led officers to find $7,000 in cocaine at a hotel in Glen Burnie on Monday night. Between April and May, detectives received a tip that two people were distributing cocaine between Glen Burnie and Pasadena. At approximately 7 p.m. on Monday, police conducted a traffic stop of the two suspects described in the tip, on Route 10 near Furnace Branch Road. Police arrested both occupants, and obtained a warrant to search a room in a Glen Burnie hotel. Officers seized approximately 70 grams of cocaine inside the hotel room, valued at $7,000 along with $800 in cash. Marylanders by the dozens turned over unwanted firearms to police in the first statewide "Gun Turn-In Day," sponsored by Attorney General Doug Gansler. A total of 250 firearms were turned in, the attorney general's office announced Tuesday. The guns turned in are now unavailable to those who would misuse them, according to David Paulson, communications director. "If one life is saved or one serious injury is prevented in Maryland, this effort is entirely worth it," he added, citing what he said law enforcement officials had expressed to the attorney general's office. "We greatly appreciate the tremendous efforts of every local law enforcement agency and the Maryland State Police who participated," he said. The guns were turned in, with …

Advocates for victims of Catholic priests are calling for transparency on recent allegations of sexual abuse by staff at Monsignor Slade Catholic School in Glen Burnie.
A national group of victim advocates is calling for increased transparency from local Catholic church officials, as police investigate claims that staff at Monsignor Slade Catholic School sexually abused a former student. Barbara Dorris, victims outreach director for the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP), released a statement Thursday saying local church officials have left families "in the dark" so far. Here is the statement Dorris wrote on the SNAP website: Our hearts ache for parents at this school who must be upset about the child sex allegations and the vague way school officials are dealing with them. Parents and the public need and deserve straight answers about possible child sex crimes. It’s disturbing to see …

Letters from Monsignor Slade Catholic School in Glen Burnie and the Archdiocese of Baltimore indicate police are investigating claims of sexual abuse by a former student.
Anne Arundel County police are conducting a criminal investigation into claims of sexual abuse by a former student at Monsignor Slade Catholic School in Glen Burnie, according to letters from school officials and the Archdiocese of Baltimore. A member of the school's administration, Slade Assistant Principal Robert Ritz, was arrested on drug charges early Wednesday—however, there is nothing at this time to connect Ritz to any allegations of sexual abuse. Slade Assistant Principal Alexa Cox wrote in a letter to parents that police spoke to members of the school's staff, and that some of those members will not return to the campus until police gather more information. In the letter, Cox said the school does not believe any students are in …

Anne Arundel County Police Chief Larry Tolliver announced his resignation Tuesday afternoon, in a letter that says the decision was not "stimulated" by negative claims about the department.
After a stretch of less than nine months heading police in Anne Arundel County, Chief Larry Tolliver announced his resignation Tuesday afternoon, as the county awaits the outcome of an investigation into claims of unfair treatment within the department. "I am resigning today because the department needs a chief who can focus solely on the department’s mission, something that is challenging to do in the current environment," Tolliver said in the letter. Tolliver's resignation is effective May 21. Patch contacted the office of County Executive Laura Neuman for information about possible replacements, but she has yet to respond. In late April, County Councilman Jamie Benoit wrote Neuman, requesting an investigation into whether Tolliver used …

That's really weird, I heard the amount was much less. A lot of people would have stolen some guns to turn in, if they had offered money or gift cards. Isn't Doug Gansler going to run for governor? It's amusing to see what some people will do to stay on the state payroll. I wonder how much this "campaign" cost the taxpayer.   more ›
