Maryland utilities are being urged to give residents until the end of May to pay off winter's whopping utility bills. FIle|Patch

They should considering they keep managing to 'hike up' the costs. Personal experience as well lastRead More month was PEPCO sending me a bill that was triplicate to my usual usage. Argument was "well, ya know, we have had a 'cold winter and snow". Didn't accept that nor their 'PR offer' to come to my home and perform 'energy-efficient' check of my home. Home is well-beyond such! Turned out that, even though employee had come on-site and supposedly taken 'actual reading', he or she manually documented erroneous kilowatt usage. The indirect (far from sufficient) excuse and apology I received from PEPCO was "well, you do realize we ALL make mistakes?"! Hey, not on my watch! Hummm!
Sharon April 17, 2014 at 11:11 am
Moral of story above! Please, folks, check your bills closely! I hope there were not 'too many'Read More out there who just assumed it was "cold winter and snow" or didn't fall back on philosophy "you can't fight City Hall...particularly those families already struggling to 'make ends meet' and to those elderly folks on a limited pensions! Though PEPCO believes itself to be, they are not 'infallible'.

Natick news - Nebraska news -- well at least they both start with the letter N. I said this before IRead More think everyone should not open any article on their local Patch unless they see the name of their community in it. They are trying to trick up with news. strange how we respond just as the terrorists desire us to. the media commemorates each incident asRead More if it were a new profit center to mine for every last click. whole populations now sit in fear of another 'something' about to happen, never again, fully safe like we were in the good old days of the cold war? once these bstrds hit us deep inside our own turf we have not become stronger, but rather 'hardened', emboldened in our delusions of ultimate superiority, no longer safe on our 'island of north america'. each of these events changes us all even imperceptably, forcing us to accept their motives, their ideals, their imam imposed concept of living. we act in unison, determined to show them we are not affected, yet that very demonstration reveals our inner need to respond, to re-affirm our own injury, each of those crowd-felt sympathies we all cling to, even if for the brief moment of our 'crowd'. be strong, and further, be alert, be conspicuous in manner in which you care for each other. shy not away from those who seek your death, but do not embrace them, as they fein no challenge to seek close to your demise.

The research is robust with ways to address the broader aspects of the distracted driving issue.Read More But, no one bothers to look for the information and understand the problems and their causes. I provided a single site and there are many. I doubt anyone took the time to read the Erie Insurance Report. Around that same reference that are more studies and suggested ways to address the problem. The point is this: the government only grabs what it can to say that it did something and to assert that it made a difference. They did this years ago with the 55 mph national speed limit and now that the speeds limits have been increased, the total highway fatalities - in absolute numbers and not just per million miles driven, have decreased. There are lots of other factors that influence highway fatalities and speed is only but one. However, the government said that it was "the" one causal factor. They were wrong. They have done the same thing with speed cameras and red light cameras too. There are many proven traffic engineering technics that have a much better performance than cameras. But, we don't do those. The true solution is actually in our driver education programs as at present there is none. What we have now is to teach folks to pass a test - not how to drive. We don't teach car control techniques or handling characteristics and the latter are very different depending on the car - BMW did a study and found that 80% of respondents did not know whether they we driving a front or rear wheel drive vehicle - as the handling characteristics (and what you need to do to avoid and accident) are very different. The problem is very complex and the solutions need to recognize that complexity. The presently divined solutions fail to consider this complexity.

Here are two incidents of distracted driving over which the driver has NO control: sneezing & aRead More bee in the car. It's a fact that you cannot sneeze without closing your eyes. Years ago in Carroll County, a man was killed when the driver of the car he was riding in sneezed several times, causing the car to wreck. He was cited and convicted of vehicular manslaughter (or something similar). I don't feel that was right. I've had that happen to me and luckily nothing has happened...yet. As for the bee? It's all I can do to keep the car on the road til I can pull over somewhere safe. I am allergic to bee stings. Then there was the time when I was driving with my little girl on 795. She unhooked the safety harness in her car seat, then climbed on the back package shelf! That time, I had to pull over on the shoulder of 795! I'm sure a cop would have just loved to have seen that one. Suffice it to say, there are enough distractions when driving without adding cell phones to the mix.
