Volunteer Opportunities Near Glen Burnie

Emmaus Center, Ordnance Road Correctional Center and Operation Welcome Home at BWI all are in search of volunteers.

Emmaus Center
Emmaus Center is a nonprofit organization that serves poor and homeless people in the Glen Burnie area.

The center has an immediate need for:

  • a volunteer bookkeeper with skills and experience in small-business bookkeeping;
  • a volunteer grant writer, ideally someone who has a track record in researching potential grants and knowledge of nonprofit and faith-based funding sources;
  • volunteer counselors with experience in working in areas of drug and alcohol abuse to work with homeless men and women and to develop community resources to whom such persons can be referred. The counselor also would facilitate working with a pastoral care associate;
  • volunteer general receptionists to help in the office;
  • volunteers to help prepare lunches for 10 to 20 people.

The hours are flexible. For more information, contact 410-766-7729 or emmauscenter@gmail.com.

Ordnance Road Correctional Center
Volunteers who are age 21 and older and pass a background check are needed as adult literacy tutors, to assist with the sewing program, to teach CPR and to lead substance abuse meetings.

Volunteers also are needed for the "Read to Me" project, helping to audio-tape the reading of storybooks to inmates' children. Weekday, weekend and evening positions are available.

The facility has an immediate need for a volunteer legal library assistant for one to two hours a week for inmates in a minimum- to medium-security county jail setting. The hours are flexible.

The facility also needs volunteers on Wednesdays in the library to help to shelve books, check out books and assist staff members with the general library duties. Call Cindy Meyers at 410-222-6350, ext. 3159, or see aacounty.org and click on Detention Facilities under Departments.

Operation Welcome Home
Volunteers needed every week at BWI Airport International Terminal to welcome military personnel returning home by cheering, clapping and shaking hands to say thanks. Also needed are donations of water and snacks for the troops, along with “thank you” cards for distribution in snack bags. For more information, call 410-757-0982 or email webmaster@owhmd.org.
