North County Schools to Display STEM Savvy

Students and faculty from the 13 schools in the North County cluster will hold the first-ever STEMtastic event Saturday at the Centre at Glen Burnie.

Thirteen schools in the North County cluster will showcase their science, technology, engineering and math skills at the first .

With North County High being one of two STEM magnet programs in the county, Regional Assistant Superintendent Catherine Herbert for the North County cluster of schools said the event is a way to reach out to the community so people can learn more about what their children are learning.

“We’re working to become a cluster that works well together with a common vision,” she said, adding that the elementary, middle, high and charter schools in the cluster see many of the same students at one point or another.

Schools are planning to present science and technology displays including a static demonstration, digital microscopes and Botball, a team-oriented robotics competition that North County principal Bill Heiser said is gaining popularity at the school.

Work from the nine elementary schools, two middle schools, one charter school and one high school in the cluster will be on display for parents and community members to see.

“We’re building a strong STEM program at North County and we’re beginning that as early as pre-k,” said Louise E. DeJesu, principal at Hilltop Elementary. “They’ll be able to see what [STEM] looks like at all those levels.”

The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Center at Glen Burnie and feature performances from the Linthicum Trash Can Band and first-grade singers from Linthicum Elementary, North Glen Elementary and Brooklyn Park Middle dance groups, the North County High step team and the Lindale Middle jazz band and orchestra.

Representatives from business and community partners, such as the U.S. Coast Guard, Northrop Grumman, Towson University, Anne Arundel Community College and Anne Arundel County Public Schools also will be at the event.

Participating schools include:

  • Brooklyn Park Middle
  • Elementary
  • Linthicum Elementary
  • Park Elementary
  • Overlook Elementary
  • Brooklyn Park Elementary
