UPDATE: Woman Dies in Marley House Fire

The Anne Arundel County Fire Department says the incident caused $10,000 in damages.

UPDATE (6:20 p.m.)—A woman died and 11 people were displaced after a house fire in the Marley area of Glen Burnie on Friday night, according to the Anne Arundel County Fire Department.

A press release stated that the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner identified the woman as 50-year-old Shari Lee DeStefano and determined the cause of death to be fire related.

Division Chief Keith Swindle said crews responded to a fire in the unit block of Sumac Road at 10:22 p.m. on Friday and found visible smoke coming from the one-story multiple family home.

An aggressive search and rescue operation was initiated by the first-responding crew and within four minutes of arrival they located and found a victim, according to Swindle.

The woman was treated at the scene by paramedics and then transported to Baltimore Washington Medical Center where she was pronounced dead at 12:14 a.m., according to a press release.

Nine adults and two children reportedly received assistance and shelter by the Red Cross after the fire.

It took approximately 46 firefighters 34 minutes to bring the blaze under control. Neighbors who saw smoke coming from the home first reported the fire that reportedly caused an estimated $10,000 in damages. The cause of the fire is still under investigation but it is believed to be accidental.

A preliminary investigation revealed there were no working smoke detectors in the home, according to the release. This is the second fatal fire in Anne Arundel County this year.
