Van Strikes Pedestrian on 8th Avenue

Police believe the pedestrian may have failed to yield the right of way to the van.

A pedestrian was struck by a van while crossing 8th Avenue NW in Glen Burnie on Friday night.

Police said officers and members of the Traffic Safety Section responded to the crash scene on 8th Avenue NW, east of Penrod Court, around 10:25 p.m. Friday.

Police believe the pedestrian was crossing from the north side of the road to the south side and failed to yield to a Chevrolet Astro Van, according to a release.

Although police said the incident is still under investigation, they believe the pedestrian may have been intoxicated and difficult for the van's driver to see.

The pedestrian was struck by the right front of the vehicle after the driver reportedly tried to swerve to avoid impact, police said.

The pedestrian was transported to Maryland Shock Trauma in Baltimore with life-threatening injuries and was listed in critical but stable condition as of Saturday morning, according to a police release.

What does intoxicated have to do with it?

Lawrence, Lawrence, Lawrence: Think it thru...If the pedestrian was drunk then he probably did not even see the car coming as he was about to cross the road.

He most likely stumbled into the path of the driver.... Thats what being intoxicated had to do with it. Do you have another theory of what happened?

Maybe the driver didn't see him. If I see somebody walking that close to the white line I'm going to slow down or move over, but that's just me.
