President Obama on Maryland’s Better Choices

President Obama praised Maryland’s “smart choices.”

By Raquel Guillory, Director of Communications

In case you missed it, this morning at the National Governors Association annual meeting, President Obama praised Maryland’s “smart choices” that have enabled us to nearly eliminate the $1.7 billion structural deficit we inherited in 2007 and preserve our AAA bond rating, while at the same time investing to keep college affordable and create the #1 schools in America for five years in a row.

We wanted to share the three graphs above, related to the President’s remarks.

We’ve also created jobs. In fact, Maryland has recovered jobs after the national recession at the 8th fastest rate in the nation, and faster than any other state in our region.

Here’s the full text and video of what President Obama said:

“So it’s prioritizing, making smart choices. That’s how Governor O’Malley in Maryland put his state on track to all but eliminate his deficit while keeping tuition down and making Maryland’s public schools among the best in the nation for five years running.”

Obviously this is all "Owe-Malley's" fault. I hate jobs and balanced budgets and having the best schools in America. It's the worst. I'm moving to Alabama.

It's just a scam to get elected to political office, jag.

Somewhere in the vicinity of these two fools. Propoganda is all this is. For Obama to talk about balanced budgets is like beyond laughable. Maryland has to by law have a balanced budget and to do it by smoke and mirrors and yearly tax increases? Yeah great model. Maybe this excuse for a president can nominate Marty to something and get him the h out of this state.
patricia February 26, 2013 at 01:04 PM
It was really special to see him on national television. Standing behind the governor of Louisiana, talking, laughing, with his hand up to his mouth, like a little school girl. Is this what progressives aspire to, they evidently get a thrill up their leg, watching a grown man act like a juvenile delinquent bully. It's easy to balance a budget when you can shuffle money around without having to account for it, then raise taxes again, to cover it up, and have the progressive school system cheerlead for you. But at least Obama remember O'Malley's name this year, last year he called him Jack!!

this thread is just going to be so full of win. something something obamacare something something birth certificate something something fast and furious
amark February 26, 2013 at 07:05 PM
It's funny that it's almost always the leftists who bring up the birth certificate BS. And Donald Trump. No serious conservative I know of does. The left likes to keep using it though to marginalize their opponents.

Its easy to have a good state economy when half the state is supported by the federal government. But, when those budget cuts kick in, watch out, MOM! Ask Northrup Grumman what they think about MD for business climate. MSN just named MD one of the ten worst states for taxes. http://money.msn.com/personal-finance/the-10-worst-states-for-taxes

Good God, are the "O's" terms up yet. Don't think I can last too much longer with the tax an fee increases from these two idiots.
Corbin Dallas Multipass February 26, 2013 at 09:09 PM
Be curious to know who you consider a serious conservative, also, I was making fun of the crazy conservatives (some of them are on here!) not the "serious" ones so not sure what your point is.

I remember as a kid what a slum Washington,DC was in the late 1970's/early 80s' and since then all the big government money has lead to a huge growth in wealth there and the surrounding area.Reagan,Both Bushes,Clinton and Obama have all lead us to a big bubble and you are right when it pops it will be a meag-ghetto.

Our country and our state is in peril. The term "by any means necessary" rings true for both Obama and OMalley. Most of us use terms like that, but we don't really mean it. Most of us have a limit from a competitive nature of what we are willing to do to win. If it is a personal situation, a divorce or a competition, most folks hit a limit where they say - I cannot go any lower than I have. A miniscule group of people do not have that trait. Obama and OMalley don't have that trait. It is not evil, it does not even register with them, it is seeing the world perhaps as a 4 or 5 year old - and only seeing how it affects them. Both the O's have this view. Obama is apparently releasing illegal aliens due to the cuts coming. He knows better, but it is about him winning, regardless of the outcome or the danger this will create. The only way this can be stopped is within the Democratice Party, however, folks like Cardin have enabled this and don't have the courage to say, Mr. President, you are hurting the country, please stop! How humiliating it must be for Cardin to have spent so much time in government but have no courage to stand up for what is right. He knows these deficits are going to ruin our country, yet he is silent.
1ke February 27, 2013 at 02:17 AM
Ruin? What are you talking about? The way I hear it, we need to learn to live within our means.
patricia February 27, 2013 at 02:34 AM
I don't think there are any democrats left in Maryland or DC. The liberal progressives have taken over the democrat party. Ideology has trumped common sense. And most people don't know the difference between a democrat and a progressive. The progressives will destroy this country to win, too bad they really are too stupid to realize there will be nothing left for them or anyone else when their done.

Ahhh, good ol' propagandists coming to defend their statist divas. Let's start with the obvious: YES, MARYLAND HAS GREAT SCHOOLS. I would hope you have "great" schools when you spend 9th most, in country, per-pupil (SOURCE for TRUTH HUNGRY LEFTISTS - HUFFINGTON POST - google it). Having great schools is THE LEAST you can do when spending that much money every year and essentially killing your taxpayers and small businesses to do it. This is like saying "I have the best car on the block" because you shelled out for a BMW while everyone else drives a Honda - but everyone else in your hood lives within budget and in a better looking house. And they get down the road all the same. Now, what else does "Progressive MD" spend money on, I wonder? Could it be imprisoning black people? Why yes, yes it is. According to the state's OWN DATA, 72% of those imprisoned are black. And what else does awesome MD spend our money on? Could it be... that... gasp... they give out corporate welfare? Just like Bush? Welfare in the form of $22 million in tax credits to a developer in Baltimore? Or an energy firm in Frederick? Face it, apologists for this trash are either hard-core social darwinists or just boobs, who see "D" and vote "D" because they don't follow politics. A true "progressive" wouldn't fall for this junk and would do the research to know better. Finally, what
Craig February 27, 2013 at 04:08 AM
I could not agree with you more. Cardin is silent. So is McSulksy. These trashy politicians are like kittens at the teet of a pregnant cat. They need the mother's milk (federal spending) to keep up the show. There is nothing that can't be solved with more tax dollars, more government or more laws. Thanks RARE MARYLAND for your awesome, truth-to-power post.

Liberal progressive. Whazat? Is it the polar opposite of a Conservative Reactionary? Is it a wing of the Social Democratic party? Do they caucus with Centrist Republicans? This is deep political theory, patricia. Are you sure you got it right? Or are you just tossing around labels?
reader February 27, 2013 at 08:35 PM
It would be nice if MOM would stop "moving us forward" (read continued rising taxes and fees). I think I would like to "stand in place" for awhile. All this crap is what you get from a leftist, one party state legislature and governor, but as I have said before it is the stupid voters of Maryland that make is so.
jag February 27, 2013 at 10:42 PM
Exactly. And exactly why most of us enjoy living in Maryland as opposed to, say, Alabama. Liberals w/their great schools and high incomes. It's so terrible that it'll be this way for years to come.
M. Sullivan February 28, 2013 at 02:27 PM
The best "smart choice" that most Marylanders could make would be to move to Virginia!
reader February 28, 2013 at 03:16 PM
Maryland has put its lips around the teat of government and has suckled their for a very long time. If that teat goes dry (read reduced government) they will have a problem. If you look at Maryland as an investor you would know that diversification is the keys to investment success. We have, in many ways, destroyed the manufacturing sector by way of high taxes and fees both on business and wage earners. In turn many businesses and individuals have left the State or will not start businesses here when taxes are compared to other, more friendly climes. If you believe you are not overtaxed and that our government at all levels is not too big, that's fine, we will have to disagree.
patricia March 02, 2013 at 01:28 PM
You asked Whazat, about liberal progressives? Check out today's Patch, with the upcoming events. The MARYLAND PROGRESSIVE SUMMIT is being on the March 4, in Annapolis. All of the politicians named are DEMOCRATS. Or shall I say used to be Democrats.
david gormley March 05, 2013 at 04:13 PM
I second "reader's" emotion. and as for "jag", I'd leave MD in a heartbeat if my house wasn't so upside down (original loan, no refi's) So I can't take advantage of your "love it or leave it" attitude. MOM is chasing a lot of big businesses out of MD, so what's next? MOM will have to raise our taxes again to make up for the loses.
