Give the Gift of Heat (and Electricity) Through BGE

BGE offers two programs to help pay bills for other people.

Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. (BGE) is once again offering you the chance to play the role of secret Santa.

The utility is bringing back its annual Fuel Fund of Maryland program for struggling customers and has introduced the new Gift of Energy program that allows you to pay the bill of any customer you choose, according to a release.

You can contribute to the Fuel Fund of Maryland, which helps struggling customers keep up with their bills, online or through postage-paid envelopes that should arrive in your December and January bills.

According to the release, the customers must have applied for assistance through the fuel fund and the contributions only will be applied after exhausting other resources.

New this year, customers who receive their bills electronically will receive a “virtual Fuel Fund envelope” by email.

Also, by using a special form available on BGE's website or by calling 410-685-0123, you donate any amount to the accounts of specific customers. Donations will apply on a future bill as a credit to the recipients’ BGE account, according to the release.

The recipients will be notified that they have received a gift credit. The donors may also notify the recipients or remain anonymous.

A recipient can be any customer and they don’t have to qualify for energy assistance or any special programs.

“The season of giving is the perfect time for those who have the means to share the warmth with those in need and to help make the holidays brighter for those families throughout Central Maryland who may be financially challenged,” Jeannette M. Mills, senior vice president and chief customer officer for BGE, said in the release. “Every penny contributed goes to those who need assistance.”

Since the Fuel Fund was founded 30 years ago it has helped thousands of individuals and families, including almost 21,000 people last year, according to the release.

I AM THE MOTHER IN A FAMILY OF FIVE. BGE CAME TO OUR HOUSE ON JULY 14TH 2010 AND TURNED OFF OUR POWER. THE BILL WAS IN MY FATHER-N-LAWS NAME AND THEN LATER IN MY HUSBANDS. THEY DO NOT HAVE THE SAME FIRST NAME HOWEVER BGE DECIDED TO COMBINE THE BILLS. WE CALLED TO RECEIVE THE BILL, NEVER DID. I TRIED FOR MONTHS & ONE DAY THEY JUST SHOWED UP AND SHUT US OFF. MY DAUGHTERS ALL HAVE ASTHMA AND WERE ON THE MEDICAL LIST. WHEN I TOLD BGE THAT WE HAD TRIED TO RECEIVE A BILL PRIOR TO BEING SHUT OFF THEY SAID THAT THEY HAD SENT US A BILL. I ASKED HOW AND WHERE WERE THEY SENDING IT BECAUSE I HAD NEVER RECEIVED IT. AFTER NUMEROUS PLEAS THEY FINALLY RESPONDED WITH VIA EMAIL. I WAS LIKE REALLY?! WHICH ONE BECUASE WE NEVER REQUESTED THAT AND I KNOW WE NEVER GAME THEM OUR EMAIL. WE LIKE FOR BILLS TO COME IN THE MAIL. ANYWAY, THEY WERE SENDING IT TO MY FATHER-N-LAW TO AN EMAIL THAT WE DONT EVEN KNOW. HE DOESNT EVEN KNOW HOW TO TURN ON A COMPUTER LET ALONE WHAT AN EMAIL ADDRESS IS.

IT IS JUNE 25, 2012 AND OUR POWER IS STILL OUT. NO ONE WILL HELP OR LISTEN. I GIVE UP AND I TRY AGAIN, AND I GIVE UP AGAIN. EVERYONE AROUND US GETS HELP BUT WE DONT. I AM DISABLED. WE HAVE TRIED DIFFERENT THINGS AND NOTHING. ONE GUY FROM BGE YELLED OUT FROM THE STREET THAT WE SHOULD PAY OUR BILL, I TOLD HIM YOU DONT KNOW OUR STORY AND BGE IS A MONOPOLY. MY DAUGHTERS SHOULD NOT HAVE TO LIVE LIKE THIS. WE NEED HELP. JUST THOUGHT I WOULD LET YOU KNOW YOU ARE NOT THE ONLY ONE OUT THERE. OUR BILL IS $14,000. WE NEVER RECEIVED A BILL THE PUBLIC SERVICE COMMISSION SAID THAT WAS ILLEGAL. BUT NOTHING HAS HAPPENED TO THEM YET. HOPE YOUR PROBLEM HAS BEEN RESOLVED. I WOULD LIKE FOR MY DAUGHTERS TO NOT HAVE TO DO THEIR HOMEWORK OR SHOWER BY FLASHLIGHT ANYMORE. JUST A FEW DAYS LATER THEY STATED IN THE NEWS THAT THEY WERE GOING TO CONSIDER A THREE DAY WINDOW OF HEAT BEFORE THE SHUT POWER OFF. I THINK COOL AIR IN SOARING HEAT IS JUST AS IMPORTANT. THE IGNORANCE OF BEING CONTENT WITH MONEY AND PLAYING US LIKE PUPPETS. IT MAKE ME SICK. ~A FRUSTRATED PARENT WITH A HEART

Mr. Doran, I reside in Columbia Maryland and I have been without lights for about 9 months. My three children and I have scuffled from place to place and have spent many days in our powerless home. I sought help from BGE, the Office of People Council and Community Action, but because the bill is in my husband's name whom I am separated from, I was denied any type of assistance. I attempted to change the bill into my name, but again I was denied. As the days got colder I was forced to take matters into my own hands. Now with it being late November, the days are cold and the nights are colder...we are dressed with outside attire in our home during the day and are super layering for warmth at night. I am crying out for HELP...please point me in the right direction! M. Hope

I am one of the "Lost In This World"...I need and want power and heat for my children and I. There has to be something that can be done to change my BGE bill from my husband's (whom I am separated from) name. It has been at least 9 month and we have exhausted our temporary places to stay. Staying warm in 20-50 degree weather isn't easy. Nor is burning a fire place, candles, oil lamps and so on. I have reached out to your company several times; even before my power was shut off, to change the bill into my name, but I was denied. HELP US PLEASE! M. Hope
