Students, parents and school officials attended a ribbon cutting and back-to-school night Monday at Southgate Elementary.
Middle school students who have an interest in the arts now have two options for participation in the Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS) Performing and Visual Arts (PVA) magnet program. While the PVA program has been operating at Bates Middle School in Annapolis for several years, this week marked the start of the first year for the program at Brooklyn Park Middle School (BPMS). According to Lori Snyder, director of both programs, the two schools will run the PVA program in a similar manner. “The students will still study the basic subjects like math and language arts,” Snyder said. “…

As some Glen Burnie students embark on a new school experience today and tomorrow, I've spent time reflecting on my first day of school and how it shaped my education. I can still remember my very first day of "pre-first" grade, which is what those in the small town of Browns Mills, NJ, called kindergarten. Luckily for me, being separated from my mother did not come as a shock as I already attended preschool through the Burlington County Action Program (BCAP) childcare service for part of the day. My mother dropped me off at BCAP that September day in 1987 and returned before the bus pulled …
One of the more complicated jobs handled by officials from Anne Arundel County Public Schools is determining the routes and schedules of buses that transport students each day. County officials work to ensure bus stops are located in places that are both convenient and safe, while also seeking the most efficient way to pick up and drop off the tens of thousands of students that ride the buses each day. Patch spoke with county schools spokesman Bob Mosier, who answered a few questions about the bus system.  Patch: How many bus stops are there in the county? Robert Mosier: There are 24,720 bus …
In his seventh year at Solley Elementary, principal Robert Wagner knew he wanted to be a teacher after volunteer tutoring children and adults in math while at Anne Arundel Community College (AACC) in the early 1970s. The Glen Burnie High School alumnus realized that his two strong areas were mathematics and helping people, and teaching just seemed to be the right fit. After getting his bachelors degree from University of Maryland, College Park, he began teaching in Anne Arundel County in 1977. After spending a little more than six years as principal at Odenton Elementary, Wagner transferred …

Infrastructure at two Glen Burnie schools will be improved with new lights, heating and air conditioning units and auditorium seating, thanks to multi-phase construction projects that were partially completed this summer. The schools will open one day later on Aug. 24 instead of Aug. 23 like other schools in the county. Glen Burnie High School on Monday completed the second phase of a three-year project to install new air conditioning in the gymnasium and renovate existing air conditioning units, as well as improve the seating and flooring in the auditorium, principal Vickie Plitt said. While…

If you have a little one about to leave home for the first time, we have some tips that can cushion the blow and make for a pleasant transition. After participating in one of a variety of summer programs, about 100 freshmen are preparing to be the first BioMedical Allied Health (BMAH) magnet students at Glen Burnie High School. Students from throughout Anne Arundel County will travel to Glen Burnie next week to begin a program that will prepare them for jobs in the health care profession. As with many students their age, a group of participants in the summer crime busters program said they didn’t necessarily have a choice about applying for the magnet program—it was a choice made by their parents. After participating in the "summer …
