A key ingredient to a tasty Thanksgiving is cranberries.
This is a great time of year to delve into all things cranberry. You probably already know cranberries are little powerhouses of vitamins, antioxidants, phytonutrients, and even fiber. I hope you'll try this recipe. This quick and delicious cranberry sauce only takes about 10 minutes to make and tastes 100 times better than canned sauce. You can leave out the Grand Marnier, but if you do, you'll want more orange flavor in your sauce. You can achieve this by using a bit more of the orange juice concentrate. It's always a sticky matter to finely dice crystallized ginger cubes. If you have a sturdy metal garlic press (not plastic, as it tends to hold odors), try pressing the crystallized ginger cubes through your press. Otherwise, use a…
A look at a fun and time-honored tradition of decorating holiday cookies for family gatherings or holiday parties.
One of my favorite childhood holiday traditions decorating cookies; the possibilities were endless. In the world of holiday cookies, you could have a purple reindeer with an orange Reese's Piece nose to guide Santa's sleigh. You could have a blue Christmas tree with red hots and chocolate chips for lights. In the imaginative world of the holiday cookie, anything is possible. Here are some to remember when decorating holiday cookies either at a party with friends or at home with family. If you choose to decorate your cookies before baking them, use decorations that are able to withstand the heat of baking. This includes nuts, dried fruits, colored/natural sugars and sprinkles. If you choose to decorate your cookies after baking them, first…

The key to making the ultimate Thanksgiving dessert.
Pie is the ultimate Thanksgiving desert. In our family, we usually have two different kinds, pumpkin and apple. We usually also have pecan and mincemeat as well, but as bite-sized tarts instead of pie, since not everyone is fond of mincemeat and a big ol' slab of pecan pie can be cloying. I know, it's crazy to offer so many deserts, but Thanksgiving dinner is all about the pies! Get local stories delivered right to your inbox or smartphone everyday with our free newsletter. Simple, fast sign-up here. If you have a phobia about pie-making, or just prefer to focus on other things, you can order your apple pie from Spring Mill Bakery in Gaithersburg. I like my own pumpkin pie better than theirs, but their apple pie is absolutely stellar…

Yo ho, yo ho—it’s a pirate’s day for you!
You can walk the plank—but can you talk the talk? International Talk Like a Pirate Day, falling annually on Sept. 19, is one of the most spirited Internet-based holidays out there, where you can really let the Capt. Morgan, parrot and peg leg jokes fly. One might wonder what the thought process was behind the holiday—and the truth is, the people who created it are just as fun and wacky as the holiday itself. Creators John Baur and Mark Summers were playing racquetball one day in 1995, and their groans and cheers during the game quickly turned into pirate slang. After many jokes, the idea for International Talk Like a Pirate Day was born. They pitched their idea to Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Dave Barry, who eventually featured it in …

By David Gutman, Capital News Service For one night at least, one of the busiest men at the Democratic National Convention set politics aside. Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley, flanked by his seven-piece band O'Malley's March, played a rollicking concert of electric Irish folk music late Wednesday night at BlackFinn Saloon in Charlotte. See a video of O'Malley singing in Annapolis this summer. O'Malley's March, a Celtic rock band, played a 13-song set, lasting well over an hour, that had a normally buttoned-down group of delegates, politicos, staffers and hangers-on dancing, cheering, and generally cutting loose. At one point O'Malley, eschewing the week's uniform of dark suits for an un-tucked black button-down, had to turn down a shot of …
