Police Announce Results of DUI Checkpoint
Nearly 700 drivers made contact with officers, who arrested a total of 11 people during checkpoints or area patrols on Friday in the northern part of Anne Arundel County.

Five drivers were arrested for driving under the influence (DUI) in the northern part of the county on Friday, according to Anne Arundel County police.
Patch previously reported that police would conduct a DUI checkpoint iniative on Friday along Ritchie Highway and 11th Avenue in Brooklyn Park. According to police, the Brooklyn Park area accounted for 6 percent of all DUI arrests and approximately 4 percent of DUI-related crashes in 2011.
County police worked with Maryland State Police to run two separate checkpoints on northbound and southbound Ritchie Highway, as well as running other patrols in the area.
Police said in a press release that officers were in contact with 695 drivers and made 11 arrests:
- 5 drivers were arrested for DUI
- 1 was arrested for possession of narcotics
- 1 was arrested for disorderly conduct
- 2 were arrested for driving on a suspended license
- 1 was arrested for an open arrest warrant
- 1 was arrested for prostitution (as a result of patrols in the area)

That was real effective use of the law enforcement officers' time and effort. Eleven arrests? How many officers were at the checkpoint and for how long?
Meanwhile innocent citizens are being murdered, raped and robbed.

So they stopped and inconvenienced 700 drivers and only arrested 5 for DUI. That seems like a total waste of manpower. I bet you they could have gotten more then 5 just by sitting outside a bar.

DUI checkpoints have proven to not only stop impaired drivers but also disuades others from taking to the road under the influence. Driving is a priviledge, not a right.

So according to Police that area only accounted for %4-6 of DUI activity last year? Seems like they should have put that checkpoint somewhere else. They only arrested 2% of the people they pulled over. Seems like they could have gotten those numbers just responding to calls IMO.

maybe if they didn't tell people when and where the checkpoints are being set up more would be arrested.
