Who knew that a corner ‘bar’ would serve breakfast, lunch and dinner? I’m from South Baltimore (and proud of it) and there are bars on every corner. However, they generally are known for liquor and lite fare, and nothing is as extensive as Hogan’s Alley.
This week’s Bites Nearby may not be the traditional family-style restaurant, but it is definitely worth mentioning since the food is beyond good and CHEAP!
Those of you familiar with the area, it was formerly Cox’s Pub. They have daily specials such as Coney Island burgers, cod fish cakes, tacos and big beef burgers. I was lucky enough to be in there when it was Coney Island burger time. I cannot express how wonderful it was to bite into something that sent me back in time (remember George’s on Light Street)?
If you come in and sit at the bar to order a drink, you will see the person behind the bar serving and cooking up food more than they are popping beer bottles or pouring drinks. Another bonus at this place is that they have hooks in front of the bar stools to hang your purse instead of trying to hang it on a chair where it keeps sliding off or sit it on the floor. Ladies—that is important!
Next time you are in South Baltimore, stop in Hogan’s and enjoy what they offer. They do have a section with tables and chairs that is separate from the bar area if you want to bring the family.
HOGAN’S ALLEY is located at 1501 Covington St. (corner of Fort Avenue), Baltimore; 410-332-1985. Hours: Monday –Thursday, 9-2 a.m., Saturday & Sunday, 7-2 a.m., full breakfast served daily until 11 a.m., kitchen closes at 8:30 p.m. daily.

I just went back to Hogan's Tuesday night and had their Taco special for $1 (hard or soft shell). Fresh and delicious for a buck. Can't beat that - and Coronas were only $2. Where can you get a meal with a drink for $3? Love them :)
